From Sonny Maier

I am Chris W. Maier (aka "Sonny"), a longtime friend of the Hall family, and after reading Greg's wonderful words from Chester's memorial service, I am moved to contribute another "sly witticism", which has remained with me for more than 55 years: My Dad, Chris L. Maier, was Purchasing Agent at Letourneau's Toccoa, GA, plant, where Chester Hall was Chief Design Engineer. Both the Maiers and the Halls lived in the steel-house company community surrounding the plant. There was a General Store/Post Office, and more relavent to this story, a Shell gas station, operated by another community resident, Gordon Smart. One cold winter morning, Chester was elaborating to my Dad on why he had to leave his car (a mid-40's model Plymouth, I believe) at Gordon's service station. He said that he told Gordon there was something wrong with the Shell anti-freeze he had purchased. "Yep, I told him that I put it in my car, and last night the radiator froze up." Needless to say, this resulted in a mad flurry of activity at the gas station! Gordon began to try to determine the extent of the damage to the engine and cooling system. He even telephoned Shell headquarters in Houston with the anti-freeze batch number, in order to "send out the alarm." Meanwhile, Chester concluded his discussion with my Dad by saying, "Course, I didn't tell him that I put it in the trunk!!" What a MARVELOUS man! We were all privileged to have shared our time on earth with him. It is said that if you ever think of yourself as indispensable, you should put your hand in a bucket of water, and see how big the hole is when you withdraw it. Chester Hall's passing leaves a large hole in my world. My sincerest sympathies to all of his friends and family. Sent by cwmaier on 19/09/2007
